WANZL – Make in India!

Everyone has already used or at least seen WANZL products, worldwide: the shopping trolley in the supermarket, the luggage cart at the airport, the cleaning trolley in the hotel or the turnstiles for access control are just a few examples of the everyday visibility and market power of this “hidden” world champion from Leipheim near Ulm.

In order to expand its production capacities in Asia and expand the location in India, the WANZL management decided to set up a joint venture with a business partner in Pune. WANZL commissioned the commercial law firm oikon, led by India expert Thomas Sasse, with the M&A transaction. Together with the Indian partners IndusLaw and Nexdigm – despite the corona lockdowns – oikon successfully carried out the complete due diligence check, company valuation, negotiation and structuring of the transaction in 2020. The collaboration took place in close cooperation with the CFO office, the global sales teams and the production manager at WANZL Europe.

“With the excellent expertise and experience of its partner, lawyer Thomas Sasse, in India, oikon has always supported us as part of our management team with crucial information on the Indian market and excellent know-how on the culture of the Indian joint venture partner. The oikon team presented efficient, pragmatic and balanced solutions in the negotiations between WANZL and the joint venture partner, which took into account both our strategic goals and those of our Indian partners. It was of crucial importance that Thomas Sasse himself has many years of management experience in India and was always able to take the cultural differences between German and Indian management into account,” explains Markus Bergmann, CFO of Wanzl. “The cooperation was trusting in every respect, very detailed and analytical, not only in legal matters, but especially with regard to the financial and tax analysis, which was a valuable support in our business planning,” adds Michael Glogger, Head of Global Cash Management / Tax and Compliance and Mohit Ahuja, General Manager at Wanzl Middle East FZE in Dubai.
